Ben Smeriglio is responsible for the Athlete and Adult Group Training programs at Capital City Sports Academy. He is also an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Howard University in Washington, DC following a stint as Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at Emory & Henry College. Prior to his arrival in Southwest Virginia, he served as a Graduate Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.
While at Sacred Heart, Smeriglio worked primarily with the softball, wrestling, men’s volleyball, golf, and rowing teams. He also assisted in training the men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s basketball, football, and cross country teams. Smeriglio played a part in helping the football and cross country team capture NEC Championship Titles in 2018 and 2017, respectively.
Prior to his time at Sacred Heart University, Smeriglio interned at Central Connecticut State University. During his time there, he worked with many of the Blue Devils’ 16 varsity teams including the 2017 NEC Championship baseball team.
Before joining the staff at Central Connecticut State, he served one year as a Professional Intern and Part-Time Assistant at Future Fitness Sport Specific Training. Smeriglio assisted with implementing speed and agility, weight training, and team group sessions with a variety of athletes ranging from middle school to professional level.
Smeriglio is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the American Heart Association. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science from Central Connecticut State in 2016 and completed a Master of Science degree in exercise science and nutrition from Sacred Heart in 2019.
